This increase means that you will remain the highest paid Woolworths meat room employees anywhere in Australia. Elsewhere in the SDA National Woolworths Agreement the wages for butchers range from $776.29 to $800.29 and for Cabinet Attendants/Packers $689.91 to $701.27. Junior rates apply for Cabinet Attendants.

The penalties applicable in the Victorian meat rooms for working after 6pm Monday to Friday and on Saturday and Sunday do not apply elsewhere. Nor do Rostered Days Off and numerous other benefits.

The AMIEU Agreement expires at midnight on 29th September 2011.  The following day the SDA Woolworths National Supermarket Agreement 2009 becomes binding on all Victorian meat room employees. This is the secretly negotiated agreement that the SDA entered into at the behest of their friends at Woolworths.

Some time before 29 September 2011 you will be asked to make a choice as to the conditions you wish to be covered by under the SDA Agreement.

If you are employed as at 26 September 2011 you will have a choice of Schedule A or Schedule B.

Woolworths and the SDA will bribe you with an 8% wage increase to accept Schedule A. This is both a normal wage increase and compensation for giving up numerous conditions.

Schedule A

If you accept Schedule A you agree:

  • that you can be rostered to work at any time Monday to Sunday, 24 hours per day
  • that you will lose your current penalties for working:
    • after 6pm Monday to Friday 50% for full time workers, 25% for part timers;
    • Saturday 75% full time, 25% part time;
    • Sunday 100% full time, part time and casuals.
  • casuals will have their loading reduced from 25% to 20%.

You also agree to give up:

  • Rostered Days Off for 5 day shift workers
  • Annual Leave Loading calculated on wages including penalties.

You also agree to being rostered to work outside the meat room at the whim of the manager.

Schedule B

By agreeing to be covered by Schedule B you will receive a 3½% wage increase, but you retain the conditions outlined above that will be lost by all those who agree to Schedule A.

The SDA Agreement will cover you for about 9 months, from 20 September 2011 until it expires on 30 June 2012. During that time Woolworths will have to negotiate a new Agreement. Those negotiations will be under the Fair Work Australia Act. This means that the AMIEU will have the right to negotiate on behalf of its members. The SDA and Woolworths will not be able to negotiate a new Agreement in secret.

The best chance you have to maintain your current conditions is to opt to be covered by Schedule B. and to ensure that all meat room employees are members of the AMIEU. This means wages will be:
