Death at Louis Rich plant in South Carolina

State and federal authorities are continuing an investigation into an accidental death at a Louis Rich plant near Newberry, South Carolina, over the weekend.

The Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton announced that Todd Hendrix was killed after he became trapped in machinery in the early hours of March 8. The 46-year-old plant worker was last seen 30 minutes before his body was discovered asphyxiated due to mechanical entrapment, according to Newton.

The death was ruled an accident, although the coroner’s office and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are still looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The plant manufactures processed sandwich meats, chicken breast strips and turkey-based products among other food items.

Louis Rich is a subsidiary of Kraft Foods, which also owns Oscar Mayer.
