Changes to Tax Free Threshold

The end of the financial year is here. With it brings changes to the Income Tax thresholds, with the tax free threshold increasing from $6,000 to $18,200 which will be a benefit to many workers.

Other changes include the Indexation of the Health & Safety Penalties, and the WorkCover Weekly Payments. We have included information to help you understand the changes.

Direct Debit Union Dues

Currently Coles takes around 10% of your union dues for Administration costs. We have had several discussions around this, and think that if we could recover some of those costs that it would greatly benefit members having all of their union dues going into supporting members and not into paying Coles Admin staff.

The way to do this would be through our Direct Debit System, whereby union dues are debited out of your bank account each week. Once set up it would automatically continue to operate each week similar to the payroll Deductions and wouldn't require any extra effort. With the added benefit of all of your dues going to help you as a member.

The Direct Debit option is entirely voluntary, we have provided an information sheet explaining how direct debit works as well as the Direct Debit form for you to fill out and return in the reply paid envelope provided.

Why Do We Need Health & Safety Reps

Health & Safety Reps are an important part of maintaining safety in the workplace. They are workers in the Department and will see and be aware of safety concerns before management or WorkSafe becomes aware of them.

Elected HSRs have a number of powers under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004. Health and Safety Representatives have rights such as:

  • The right to be consulted about any proposed changes that might affect health and safety;
  • The right to inspect the workplace;
  • The right to go to HSR training, of their choice, on paid time;
  • The right to seek assistance;
  • The right to information on health and safety in the workplace;
  • The right to be provided with facilities;
  • The right to issue a Provisional Improvement Notice if health and safety issues can’t be resolved; and
  • The right to direct work to cease, if there is a situation of immediate danger.

If you would like more information about HSRs or on how to become a HSR in your workplace please contact your Union Organiser or Union Health & Safety Officer Gwynnyth Evans on (03) 9662 3766

Dads and partners now have legal right to ask for time off work when a new baby arrives

Dads will no longer have to justify asking for time off work when their new baby arrives, thanks to new laws that ensure they have the right to access paid parental leave.

Unions have campaigned for paid parental leave for both parents for more than 30 years.

All parents have a right to spend time together with their new baby and there is no reason why work should prevent them from doing so.

We know all parents want to spend time with their children when they are born.

Thanks to the Dad and Partner Pay leave scheme, which passed through Parliament in the last week in June, eligible dads will have access to two weeks’ government-funded Dad and Partner Pay at the rate of the national minimum wage.

New laws would allow fathers and partners, including adopting parents and parents in same-sex couples, could freely seek access to leave.
Unions are pleased that these new laws means all employers will now have to move into the modern era and will help ensure workplaces reflect the reality of modern working families.

Financial support is especially important for the growing number of workers in insecure work, particularly those in casual or contract work, who usually had to forfeit all leave entitlements.

With 40% of the workforce in insecure work, until now a large number of partners would not get any leave pay at all if they wanted to spend time with their new family.

This new leave entitlement will be especially welcome news to these men and partners.
